The LACER
Afterschool Programs
Founded
in 1995, by Jackie Goldberg and Sharon Stricker, LACER (Literacy, Arts, Culture,
Education, and Recreation) began providing a model after school program in
Hollywood, California. They, along with community organizers, teachers,
artists and volunteers developed a daily after school arts and literacy
education program offered free to middle school youth.

Now
in four Los Angeles middle schools the
award-winning LACER Afterschool Programs
provides thousands of youth a safe and productive place to be after school.
They select between a multitude of offerings in theater, music, dance, and the
visual arts. Taught by professional artists, the free classes are created
to correlate with the core middle school subjects of English, math, science, and
social studies. In addition, LACER provides daily homework assistance, a
comprehensive literacy and writing program, recreation, a reading program
called Junior Greats, and the innovative Math Busters.

Independent
evaluations have confirmed that participation in LACER dramatically impacts
student learning and improves students’ attitudes toward themselves and
education. With the help of talented artists, instructors and mentors, LACER is
committed to providing a safe and creative environment for students who join the
afternoon programs.
