"LACER is important to me because it has good classes that kids like.  I wish LACER would never end. I like it so much because it is fun. Soccer is the best for me and also dance!”

Danny R., 7th grade

“LACER is important because I get to do fun activities and help with my homework. I also get to go to fun field trips. Before LACER, I could not act in from of people, I would get shy, same thing with singing. Not now!”

Stephanie R., 8th grade

“LACER is important to me because I have fun and it's cool. I like coming to Basketball and to the Computer Lab. I see my friends and it its lots of fun. They give us free snacks and take us on field trips - it’s cool!”

LACER's

Classes & Workshops

The LACER Afterschool Programs is a non-profit organization that provides free arts and literacy based after school activities to students throughout Los Angeles.

Now in four middle schools and two high schools; the nationally recognized (Coming Up Taller Award 2003) LACER Afterschool Programs provides thousands of youth a safe and productive place to be after school.

Founded in 1995, by Jackie Goldberg and Sharon Stricker, LACER (Literacy, Arts, Culture, Education, and Recreation) began providing a model after school program in Hollywood, California.

Students select between a multitude of offerings in theater, music, dance, and the visual arts.  Taught by professional artists, the free classes are created to correlate with the core subjects of English, math, science, and social studies. In addition, LACER provides daily homework assistance, a comprehensive music program, recreation, and the innovative LACER Learning program.

The LACER Afterschool Program is THE place to go for DRUMLINE at Hollywood High, CHEER at Fairfax High, DRILL TEAM and DANCE at King Middle School and offers team sports, 'rock band' music classes, visual art workshops and excellent tutoring in all subjects.

ART-STARS

Theater, Musical Theater, Dance, Jewelry Making, Mixed Media Art, Digital Photography, Sculpture, Survey of 20th Century Artists, Architecture, and Drawing are taught through this innovative after school arts opportunity.

MUSIC

Drums, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Jazz Band, Rock Band, Singing, Violin and Piano/Keyboards are taught at each LACER program.

LITERACY

RECREATION

Soccer, Basketball, Game Zone, and Flag Football are offered seasonally and most often daily!

CITY AS CLASSROOM

Each program takes field trips across the Los Angeles area such as: L.A. County Museum of Art (LACMA), Los Angeles Zoo, Science Center, Griffith Park, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) annual Whale Watching trips and summer camps.

CLASSES FOR PARENTS

Workshops and events are offered throughout the year in a variety of subjects (relationships, immigration, computers) to offer support, education and resources.

Independent evaluations have confirmed that participation in LACER dramatically impacts student learning and improves students’ attitudes toward themselves and education.

With the help of talented artists, instructors and mentors, LACER is committed to providing a safe and creative environment where student leaders emerge.
